IT WOULD SEEM THAT YOU CAN CLAP IN THE COMMONS...

...AS LONG AS YOU ARE AN ESTABLISHMENT LONDON PARTY

(Of course it helps if you are clapping in support of the Speaker)

  1. Funny how the Speaker *ahem* claims that it is a long long established tradition that clapping is not allowed. Aye he is right it certainly is a long long time right back to March 26th 2015 to be exact!

I know they constantly remind us plebs that a week is a long time in politics but really he certainly does have an extremely poor state of memory if he can't even remember back to march THIS YEAR!

    1. Absolutely amazing.

As someone pointed out you can bawl and shout and no one bats an eye; you can fiddle your expenses and no one cares; you can molest and even murder children and people cover up for you; adn according to Mr Bruce, you can and do lie through your teeth...

      But don't bloody clap!

    2. I've heard that as clapping is banned because it contravenes convention ... apparently then alternatives are currently under review.

    4. I think it would be hilarious if the FAMOUS 56 actually did do the Time Warp in HoC. There would be nothing the Speaker could say for starters. LOL

I do believe the rare occasion such as electing the speaker once every Parliament
especially after his attempted stap in the back by the Cameroons.
Is not the same as the snp MPs behaving like a pack of well trained seals

I'm inclined to think that clapping is less offensive than the normal behaviours of MPs.

But I suppose if you like the Gentlemen's Club type of thing, clapping must seem like ou are at the theatre or a concert, instead of a polo match.

Give Jutie my best regards... :)

    2. Ah so they ARE well trained then, unlike those of other parties who need nappies and certainly a good clap round the heed because they are anything BUT well trained Niko.

    43. While we agree that spontaneous clapping at the end of a speech could in no way be interpreted as disturbance of the speaker, there is a danger that such a practice might be open to abuse and could lead in certain circumstances to orchestration of what would amount to standing ovations with the success or failure of a speech being judged not by its content but by the relative length of the ovation at the end. This might not disrupt an individual speech, but would disrupt the tenor of the debate, as indeed would slow handclapping. At the same time we condemn the growing misuse of the traditional cry of "hear, hear" and in particular the recent practice of unnecessary noise of this kind from both sides which has routinely accompanied the entrance of the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition before Prime Minister's Questions. Such noise serves no useful purpose and is grossly unfair to the Member who is currently trying to ask a question and to the Minister who is replying.

    1. A couple of Irn Bru crates and a megaphone will suffice instead.

    2. Clapping hasn't really made the Scottish parliament too unruly, and I see that Blair actually got a standing ovation, not least from the Tories.

      :)

    3. No one really listened to a man on an Irn Bru crate with a megaphone... unless you mean the 10 people that were his entourage, and went everywhere with him.

    4. Perhaps our Parliament apart from the Labour louts who are inclined to bang desks like unruly Children is too well mannered. The amount of shouting and talking over other members is absolutely disgraceful but clapping, well where will it all end.

    5. I think most parliaments have polite clapping.

Even probably the US's parliament allows it. Did the fossils know that it's ok in America?

  4. Just out of coincidence Tris I wonder how good the Speaker is at sticking to House of Commons conventions himself ... hmm not very in my view.

Where is his Speaker gown that he refuses to wear?

Where is his speaker's wig that he refuses to wear?

Remind me again ... what was that he was sayting about convention again?

    1. Britches, buckled shoes....?

Apparently the wig went when Betty Boothroyd declined to wear it, as her hair was permed or something and it would have spoiled it.

      Convention is THAT easily changed.

  7. I can't stand the "hyear hyear" stuff. I'd prefer to see "getitupye" or "bollocks!". Might attract a wider audience at PMQs.......

Only one thing on the clapping, it reminds me of the scene in Robocop where every time the OCP Chairman speaks the executives applaud wildly to show favour. "I say, good business is where you find it...."

    Pass my medication............
