ALL OVER BAR THE VOTING

Estimated Declaration Times
Well, it's all over bar the voting.

Much has been written about melt downs and Labour and the Liberals being obliterated.

I'm cautious. OK, call me a pessimist and a glass half empty man, but I prefer to predict low and be pleasantly surprised, rather than the other way around.

Remember any more seats than we have at the moment will be a gain.

At present the SNP has 6 seats in the London parliament. To get 12 would represent a massive success. It would double the representation, and would be one more than they have ever had in London.
Synchronisity  in Anas's ward.
All these people seem to have had the same thoughts, and written the same letter at the same time. Just how completley amazing is that?
Does he have magic powers?
Twenty seats would be a fantastic breakthrough; 30 utterly fabulous.

I'm thinking somewhere between 30 and 35 seats may go SNP.

Any more than that and we are off the scale.

Whatever it is, if it isn't the 59 that some of the press has been predicting, the unionists will call it all a busted flush. Be ready for that and remember that on the day after the election, parties tend to, and have always tended to, big up what little success they have had.
How well we remember, Dave.
Just read it back now and weep for your wickedness.
Just for a little light relief on the last day...

How many seats do you think the SNP will get, realistically?

And...

Of the potential losers, who do you most wish to lose their seat, and why?

Will it be Margaret Curran, for the vitriol she has spewed and for her dogged devotion to right-wing Jim, when only weeks before his election (she voted for him too) she was promising Glasgow Man a lurch to the left; to old Labour and socialism? (Like she remembered what that was!)

Will it be Jim himself?

The strangest possible choice to lead a party that is begging for a move to the left, is a neo-Liberal, anti-Muslim, white supremacist, enthusiast for war, and lieutenant of the odious Blair.

Why did they elect him?

Failure to win his seat would be the ultimate humiliation for the party. Not particularly likely to happen as I'm sure they will have put massive resources into the seat, and will have taken every possible measure to ensure that Jim is back with a decent majority.

Or maybe it will be Cathy. Her record certainly suggests that she is pretty solidly anti Scotland having any powers. Interestingly in a year when most public servants had no pay rise or a pay rise of 1%, she appears to have given her husband a rise of 100%. Nice work if you can get it... and keep it.

There's a raft of obnoxious Labour MPs who seem to have achieved almost nothing for some of the poorest people in Britain, and Western Europe. Amazingly Willie Bain, the worst of them, is almost guaranteed his seat.

Just as well, what else could he do?

Remember though, whoever it is you want rid of, THIS is what we are up against. For all their protestations that they want us to stay, there is a strong feeling that we are not welcome in their union.

Who can put up a strong fight for Scotland? Maggie Curran, Cathy Jamieson, Anas Sarwar?

Of course we shouldn't forget the Liberals, although heaven knows, it's easy to do just that. They seem to have adapted remarkably quickly to being Tories. The obvious choice is high flyer Danny Alexander. You may remember that he's not a REAL Tory, just an honorary one.  Alternatively, there is the all but useless Scottish Secretary whose involvement in l'affaire francaise has still not been explained?

Anyway, your thoughts, if you have time on what I know will be a busy day, will be much welcomed.

Fingers crossed. Good luck in all your constituencies.

    1. Thanks Danny. Let's hope that this time tomorrow we will be celebrating...

It's been a LONG election campaign, but I have to admit that, by anyone's standards NOTHING can beat the 18 months you guys have to put up with!

    2. Yes Tris, I've lost count of the Republicans who are already running or will soon announce. And for the Democrats we have ONE or maybe two, depending on how you count the "Independent" Senator Bernie Sanders who just announced his run for the presidency. He's a white haired old Socialist from Vermont. (Where else could an elected American Socialist be from EXCEPT New England?.....LOL.)

You might be interested in a New York Times article about Nicola Sturgeon which ran a couple of days ago. It's no small thing to be so prominently featured by the august New York Times.

  2. I don't want to predict but the omens are good. In October 1974 when we won 11 seats the SNP polled 30% to Labour's 36. The polls are predicting a 20% SNP lead minimum so it will be interesting to see what this happens. Labour will be a tad worried.

    1. That's interesting, Marcia.

I guess this is a good illustration of the appallingly unfair FPTP system and the much-talked-about "Tipping Point".

With a 20% difference (in the other way) this should make a heck of a difference.

Yes, I imagine a tad worried is a bit of an understatement, but they've had it a long time coming.

Lets hope we get as many as necessary to represent a strong "Voice of the People" then they ignore us at the peril of the union.

    1. Wow... thanks Kangaroo.

If we have over half the seats they would be MAD to ignore us. So 30 would be fantastic.

They seem to have no problem over the last 5 years subjecting us to rule from London with 12 seats on their side of the chamber.

If 12 can form the government then 30+ MUST have a voice.

But of course the British state is very good at seeing things its way!!!

  4. Tris, thanks for running probably the most up-beat, happy, pro independence site on the whole of the internet.

For you and Munguins fans independence it is possibly the most important thing in our lives, but you point to other stuff that is equally moving.

This is not a balance I see struck very often elsewhere.

Argueably, you are the most internationalist, nationalist, with baby elephants, on the whole of the internet.

      Thank you very much.

Yes, independence is pretty important to me and to Munguin. (He's indicated to me that he'd even forego a richly deserved honour, if we could ensure that we would be free...)

I think I realised a long time ago that we could never compete on sheer journalistic skills with the likes of Wings and Bella, nor on intellectual rigour with the likes of Scot Goes Pop or Lallands Peat Worrier, but we could add a little light relief to the blogosphere with a few jokes and some relaxing nature pictures.

We're just glad that it seems to go down quite well with folk.

Thanks for your encouragement. It's very much appreciated.

Interesting, and I think I can see where the Liberals and Conservatives might come from..

I wonder which are the 16 Labour seats that will be saved and if they will contain the three that Labour are trying hard to save... Their so-called big hitters: Murphy, Alexander and Curran!

      Delete
    2. I've ran predictions...and on my numbers Jim Murphy may just edge it (by hundreds of votes, certainly NOT thousands) IF he can get tactical votes from Tories (remember 30% in his constituency are Cons)

Paisley South? I can't see D.A holding his seat...can't find the numbers to support him. Not with these swings against him in Ashcroft polling.

But I'm convinced Ian Davidson will be re-elected, and so will Willie Bain...so two Labour seats there from Glasgow.

I've seen very few posters of any kind in Dundee. But I think, I've only seen 2 for Mr Marra.

I got one from the woman who is standing in Dundee East. It came in the post. There are no posters in my street for her and I've seen no one canvassing for her.

It's interesting that McGovern was exactly the kind of MP who took his constituents' loyalty for granted, never expecting for a moment, that one day the tide would turn.

His latest escapade in a town centre pub at closing time, and the "Do you know who I am (or was)?" line being trotted out to someone who clearly had no earthly idea who he was, save for some old punter and his wife who'd had a bit too much "swallae", was classic.

I agree that Miliband is pretty hopeless. "Hell NO", if you ask me.

But we have to stop Cameron, no matter what.

Thousands of deaths every month of people who have committed the crime of being sick but unable to convince the DWP who seem to take no account of what qualified doctors and specialists say in their decision making.

Even Miliband would be better than that (although we shouldn't forget that it was Labour that introduced that system, and that is why we need some progressive voices in parliament, like Plaid, Green and SNP).

It's a bit of a wee community on here and I love that aspect of it. You've all become friends!

I've never thought that Murphy would go, although he deserves it. But his hard right wing politics suits the well-heeled Tory voter in his constituency, and in any case they will have done everything possible to ensure that they don't suffer the ultimate humiliation of his defeat.

He's a brass necked man. He'll find a way of clinging to his salary and expenses, where a more feeling person would slink away in shame.

Dougie gone would be great, and to a 20 year old! YES!

And it goes without saying that Greetin' Maggie would be a great loss to politics... Not.

Think of all the milk that wouldn't go sour.

I think I mentioned before that I met her some time ago when she was a Communities minister in the Scottish Executive. She seemed to know what she was doing, was pleasant and actually even a bit of a laugh.

She has been put in a position, as Scottish shadow, where she is so far out of her depth, she makes Carmichael look good. Even the BBC can't resist making her look stupid.

And she has become a sour and bitter woman. She was fine when the SNP was a wee opposition party, but goodness, how she hates them being in power and taking her candy.

      Good choices.

      And thanks again. :)

    2. AMENDED COMMENT FROM PANDAS PAWS

I'd like to echo Douglas, I think this site is great - it might not have the profile of some of the others but it's a wee gem.

As for who I'd like gone. Well Murphy obviously. I predict he'll win, and with tactical voting to him from the Tories, he might even maintain a good majority. How that will play with a SLAB with perhaps its lowest number of MPs since nineteen canteen I don't know.

I'd love Douglas Alexander to lose - the shadow foreign secretary and Labour's election strategist losing to a 20 year old! And there is more chance of it happening than Murphy. People I'd like to see winning are Natalie McGarry (bye Margit), John Nicolson (bye Jo Swinson) and Philippa Whitford (bye unknown SLAB person).

  9. I must have been a bad influence on Cathy who used to be more generous and socialist than I ever was. For that reason alone I want her gone. The others mentioned are so obnoxious that I want them all gone. I cannot think of a single one that commands my respect. I would settle for around 30 SNP seats and to be honest I really do not care who else gets in as they are pretty much the same but I suspect that, because of individual constituency circumstances that Labour and the Libs will share the rest. Happy hunting, guys and girls. Much credit to your blog and correspondents who invariably inform and cheer me up! Incidentally where is NIKO?

Actually the "power corrupts" quote comes to mind.

Some of these people start off OK, reasonable and hard working, with a heart and a real sense of purpose, and then Westminster seduces them.

I'll be disappointed if it is fewer than 30 seats. I want the Scots to have a majority of Scottish seats. When I say Scots, clearly I know that most of the Labour and Liberals are Scots too, but I mean working for a party that has its roots in Scotland, and a policy making team in Edinburgh, rather than London. If they care about Scotland first and other places after, I don;t give a damn where they come from, from Guatamala to Greenland!

Thanks for your kindness, John. In return, thanks for entertaining us with your good humour and "funny island ways!!!"

  16. I misread the title and thought it was bar PRICES! (too many spreadsheets today)

I'm going for 31 seats. Anything over 40 and Labour is going to split, with a true Scottish Labour forming.

Jim Murphy and Danny Alexander to lose their seats. I think Douglas Alexander will survive.
I'm not sure that Alex Salmond is a definite. Think there's going to be a lot of tactical voting.

In England, Farage to win, and I think UKIP might surprise a few. Lib Dems to get slaughtered, at least 30 seats lost, with Clegg resigning IF he retains his seat. Ed Balls is a favourite to get toppled (please!), as he has a slim majority. No loss there then. Caroline Lucas may retain her seat. But the Greens control the council in Brighton and they have screwed up apparently. Plaid Cymru should do reasonably well this time, especially as the Labour devolved government has well and truly screwed up the NHS in Wales.

Conservatives are likely to win enough seats to look at a coalition. Labour are not going to come close, and Milliband will resign within 48 hours, especially if Ed Balls loses his seat.

If the Conservatives do lose out, then Cameron will resign, with Boris taking his place (God help everyone!).

But if there is one person I want to see kicked out by the voters, it is Ian Duncan Smith. He is the most arrogant, pretentious and patronising individual I have had the displeasure of watching for many years.

Voted early this morning on the way to work. Should be pointed out that both the Labour and SNP reps were there, chatting away quite amiably. I've seen them in previous elections and it is all good natured. A pleasant greeting by both and no last minute persuading. Would be nice if the media would also focus on this a bit more often.

IF and it's a big if the exit poll is right it wouldn't any difference if Scotland voted 59 SLABs in, Labour still wouldn't win. But it's a long night before we get enough REAL results to tell. First Scottish results around 1.30am.

    3. All good news.

yeah, I'm seriously dubious about that exit poll, but you're right, no matter what Jackie Baillie says, the numbers wouldn't have added up if we'd all voted Labour.

      :)

    4. Ed Balls is the one looking really unhappy. Rumour has it he is going to be unseated.

He was on BBC earlier and used that well-worn phrase by a loser: "We've had a good campaign". A phrase with the same meaning as "they have my full confidence......".

Minority government definitely the better outcome than a coalition. When Cameron is trying to push policies through he will have to negotiate with the SNP.

Someone has commented that the UK may be heading towards the politics of continental Europe, where minority governments are common. Is more stable than the usual short term mince we get every 4 or 5 years.

Now, is Jim Murphy looking for a job? I know somewhere that is recruiting call centre positions.........

  32. I now think the SNP are going to get 50+ seats.

Seems Lamont was right when she resigned. Labour HQ treated the Scottish MPs/MSPs as a backwater. Michael Connarty (Bathgate) having a bitch and he says he's screwed.

Alistair Carmichael looks safe but not by much.
