    1. Yes. I love the railway journeys.

I'd love to be able to travel like that.

      Seconded ...any thoughts, Dean?

    2. I agree with Portillo.

I mean, we've been waiting 23 years for a Queen Speech by a majority Conservative gov't, and then we got this.

It is a complete all about 'winning' the EUref, and the business of gov't is, somewhat, on hold for it.

Disappointing is a good word for it.

    3. Of course in fairness, not knowing what the outcome of the referendum will be, it may be difficult to come up with real policies.

Maybe the speech should have been postponed?

  5. Population size of Scotland will flood into UK if Britain stays in EU, warns Michael Gove

Just luv the hidden or not so hidden racism can you imagine a population
As big as the Scots moving into yer street .....I mean like Scots and we all
Know what that means they could try and take over like they tried with the Labour
    Party last year....

    1. I think that there are good arguments for and against the EU, but with typical Great British values to the fore, they have gone for the racism card.

Works nicely with the Daily Mail.

I suppose the remain lot could argue that all the foreign workers will go home, and we will get back all the ex pats from Spain and Greece and Italy and (they tell me) Bulgaria (where houses are incredibly cheap).

      Ho hum...

  6. Well said Mr Portillo. I wonder if he's had a trip on the Borders Railway yet?

    1. Don't think so.

I'd like to see him do some in India. My Indian friend tells me that the intercity railways there are quite spectacular.

As I can't afford to do it for myself, maybe Mr P would do it for me?

  7. Tris

Not often I would ever have any sympathy for anything Portillo has to say but he is correct. This government have ruined everything and their only idea to cover up how much they have destroyed the economy and public services is to make the poorest pay for it with cuts and sanctions.

What really pisses me off though on top of that is the compliance of the media in this country. This government for an honest media would be manna from heaven, they are so corrupt, devoid of ideas and are devastating the country any half wit journalist could have a go at them. Even my crappy blog is better than 90% of the print media now, bloggers do more investigation than the paid media. Unreal.

I still think this government could fall if things continue they way they are going and esp if Labour can get themselves sorted out and start applying some pressure.

    1. They own the BBC Bruce, and most of the papers are theirs. Owned by millionaires and billionaires they aren't likely to be socialist!

I wonder if any other country has a press which is almost exclusively owned from overseas?

The Barclays from the Channel Islands; Rothermere from France; Murdoch from America; the Independent from Russia. Only Dirty Desmond, the pornographer, seems to be based in the UK.

Your blog isn't crappy, by the way!

If Labour could ditch the Blairites and get themselves together, maybe forget the visceral hatred of the BBC, then maybe there could be a proper opposition.

    2. ^^

I kind of expect at least some fall out amongst the Tories, no matter whether the result is Yes or No. It is argued, by me at least and not a few bloggers, that the dividing line in Scottish politics is between independence and unionism, I think there is a similar dividing line in the rest of the UK between 'in' and 'out'.

I expect these divisions to grow rather than diminish. It is perhaps true that everything else is on hold until these fundamental differences of opinion are ironed out.

  8. I loved his train journeys too - when I watched TV.

But Tris, travelling need not be expensive. On the trains, Interrail is still quite good value. Cheapy airlines are ubiquitous nowadays. A wee bit of forward planning and membership of some hotel loyalties cards are where to start. You can get hotel rooms in worth visiting cities from £20/30 in the summer. Just go where the natives are on holidays elsewhere. IE, Northern Europe is cheap in July/August cos they are all away to the Med.

You just have to get away from the Scottish Rain.

    1. My mum records them for me on her Virgin box, SA. She does David Attenborough shows too.

It's about the only things that are worth watching on the BBC.

Tell me more about hotel loyalty cards. I'd do more travelling if the hotels were a reasonable price. I'm not into expensive hotels or feather bedding, but I also hate nasty hotel rooms with mattresses that should have been thrown out when Victoria was on the throne.

      :)
