FOR OUR ENGLISH READERS...

...THIS IS YOUR NEW LORD CHANCELLOR

A journalist, who, as far as I can see, has no legal training at all.

I've always though that Gove was one of these people who managed to look and sound like a prat, no matter what he was doing. Reading his Wikipedia page has shown that looks and actions apart, it's not that far from the truth.

The Oxford English Graduate is now the English Justice Secretary, and thus, Lord Chancellor. And just to prove it he dresses up like even more of an idiot in robes to which his qualifications (2:1 in English) hardly entitle him.

I'm really glad Scots law is separate from English and that our Justice Secretary doesn't have to wear daft frocks to do his job.

  1. Tragically, he's ours in Wales as well. Come to think of it, we haven't had one of our own since Gruffydd Young in the 15th century.

    1. Oh hell, I thought you had your own.

You really have to get your own if that's the standard they are going to force on you.

  2. Correct me if wrong, but I think this is the first Lord Chancellor who isn't actually a lawyer?

Sorry, but there are certain cabinet positions which surely must have someone who has a related qualification, and Justice absolutely must be one.

For some reason Gove reminds me of Vic Reeves - but without an iota of talent. (Apologies to Vic).

    1. Yeah, Id say so. It seems to me that law is so complex that you really should have some qualification.

Jack Straw, Kenneth Clark, were barristers but the idiot Grayling had a degree in history, second class. Wiki says "He was the first non-lawyer to have served as Lord Chancellor for at least 440 years".

I don;t think ive ever come across a less talented politician than Gove.

    2. I think economics is very complex and it should have someone in charge who has a qualification - by which I mean not a History degree and work experience as a towel refolder!

And social security is very complex so someone with a degree that isn't faked might be handy too!!

  3. The major problem we are about to face is when English "Law" tries to impose it's will on Scot's Law.
In the past when Scotland was represented by "UK" political parties such as British Labour it could be easily implemented without any controversy.
It is now inevitable that the SNP in Westminster and in Holyrood will reject any legislation which will leave us worse off (about time!).
Of course, thanks to people like Lord Tankerness and friends,Scots law may be subjected to their
"Supreme" court in London but that would be pretty well a last resort.
Westminster, however, seems to be resorting to appointing unelected Lords to rule over us so we shall see what happens.
Westminster doesn't do democracy as far as Scotland is concerned.

    1. It doesn't do democracy at all...

We have to give them no excuses for overriding our laws.

  6. Great, another Scot. Still, he can't be as bad as the last Scot in that office: Charlie Falconer.

    1. Hi Gareth...

I wouldn't bet on it. Charlie was crap, I'd agree, but I'm not sure that Gove can't be worse. He seems to have been the watchword for incompetence in everything he has ever done.

We shall see though. It will be an interesting contest.

Charlie (Blair's man) or Govie (Rupert's man)?

  7. Where is Scots Law when the country needs it. Six thousand square miles of of Scotland annexed and not a peep from our legal system. Treaties of Union broken regularly and not a peep out of them. Scots law will do nothing for Scots people, I do believe that they were part and parcel of the Scottish establishment that sold us down the swanny in 1707 so that they could remain independent. I doubt the have any concern for Scottish people

    1. Willie: Law, of course, is always in the hands of those who control it.

And at the time The Scottish government was in the hands of Labour as was the British government. Blair controlled everything.

I think that the reason that law, education and the church, not to mention health (or what there was of it) stayed independent of the English systems, was that lawyers, judges, the church and the university principles and those who practised medicine, were determined that they wouldn't be messed about by any changes. ...like having to learn new laws and stuff like that.

Wonder if people around the world laugh at all the silly constumes that are around the British establishment and westminster, the balck tights, Gove in your photo. I also agree with Wullie above to a large extent, Scottish Law can be over ruled at any point by English(British) Law at the Supremem Court and really has done very little to defend Scotland's interests in this ' equal ' Union.

    1. Well, to be fair, Bruce some of the rest of them have some funny costumes... specially in the legal profession. :)

We must, always remember that anything that is passed in the Scottish parliament can be overturned in Westminster. The power we have is only lent. But, it must be done by Scots law.

  9. Given Mr Gove's rise in Government at break neck speed, I use what I term as my particular yardstick. If someone is promoted far beyond their level of competence then there is one very good reason for it. They are higher up the lodge than one would expect, in some cases further than those who had the position to promote. So I reckon Michael is higher up the pecking order than David.
It was hard to believe when I saw this particular promotion as he a, is not a lawyer and b, he is a Scot though with his put on accent you would have a great deal of difficulty telling.

    1. Either it is the influence of Mr Murdoch, Mr Gove's good friend... or he has some dirt on Cameron.

  10. I know they said we Scots were too stupid to have Independence, but look at the Government the UK has (mainly) because of how the English voted. What does that say about them?
