If someone can find a rational explanation for this choice, given some of the amazing people in these islands, then please feel free point it out.
All I can say is if Nigel Farage can win Briton of the Year, and Tony Blair can win prizes for his humanity, then I'm bloody glad I never won anything ever. Because if I had, I'd give it back now.
Way to devalue these type of awards.

Choosing Farage diminishes us all. Thanks for nothing, The Times.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. If he is the BEST briton, what does that say for the rest of them?
DeleteNigel 'call them chinky' Farage is a jingoist of the worst order.
ReplyDeleteHe'd have us blaming immigrants for stealing our jobs while also pretending they're living on welfare. Brand was right, he is a poundland enoch.
Farage bigotries diminish our society. I hate him. And hate is a strong word, but suitable for the prejudice dripping from UKIP.
I remember thinking that when he said that he felt intimidated when he was on a train and people were speaking in foreign languages around him, that it that was all he felt intimidated about, he was a lucky man.
DeleteNot for him the worry of the rent man, the man from the Jobcentre or the man from the garage who tells you you need a new clutch in the car you depend on to get to work... and it will cost £600!
No, this man, from an immigrant family himself, with a German speaking wife, who has chosen to work in a foreign country, is intimidated by people speaking languages he doesn't understand.
Prat!
So we know who the Times are going to back in the General Election.
ReplyDeleteIs that a surprise folks?
True, Conan... and I doubt they would do that without Rupert's approval.
DeleteI wonder what way the Sun will go. With respect to the Times, it has a relatively small readership, most of whom already know their politics quite well. The Sun has a still sizeable readership and can change people's minds.
And what if the Mail went for them too....!!!
The Times is the archetypal Establishment newspaper, so this is further confirmation that UKIP is not a genuine protest party, but a tool of the Establishment, designed to ensure that those who have become discontented with the main Westminster parties have a neo-liberal party to turn to. In this way they can register their protest without threatening the interests of the Establishment.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point Les. People like Murdoch must be wondering where the discontented, none of the above, vote will go.
DeleteI imagine Rupert and Nigel can find a lot of common ground.
This septic(not a typo) isle, truly is morally bankrupt.
ReplyDeleteIf you go through the London "establishment", can you find a branch that isn't corrupt?
DeleteRoyals, Lords, Commons, Press, Church, Police, Secret Police, Civil Service, Law Courts.
I wouldn't trust any of them as far as I could throw John Prescott.
tris and others
ReplyDeleteFarage is worthy of Conservative Englishman of the year anytime i would say.
Deano
“You can't hate the roots of a tree and not hate the tree.”
― Malcolm X
Best you think on that my dear Deano for much of the views he expresses
other than immigrants/gays you seem to agree with
PS obviously there is a fakey me posting on the republic one
can tell the difference as he aint as erudite as me and has no
love of ancient greece....so just beware
hate me for what i do by all means but not for another's
crimes to literacy..
I've spoken to Munguin, Niko.
DeleteHe says that anyone impersonating you in this blog will be dealt with very severely. Frankly I've no idea what happens in the dungeons of Munguin Towers and I don;t want to know, but they fake Niko will likely find out.
Talking about Ancient Greeks... I thought the Duck of Edinburgh was in fine fettle on Christmas day.
Ο φόβος δεν είναι. Μυστική αστυνομία Munguin θα τον πάρει, Νίκο!
I think Niko needs to have a wee rest Tris, he's become increasingly bitter and incoherent these days. Maybe send Munguin round his house to set him straight?
DeleteMunguin refuses point blank to go round. He says the quality of the champagne may be suspect!
DeleteRupert Murdoch is the owner. Remember The Leveson Inquiry?
ReplyDeleteBirds of a feather flock together.
Too true...
DeleteThis is one of your best blogs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your work over the year, on behalf of us all.
ReplyDeleteIndeed John, I think this is one of the most powerful pages on the Web. Pictures make very strong punchy statements
DeleteJohn, thanks very much. It's a pleasure doing the blog. Here's to another year of more...
DeleteHelena. I agree that pictures can sometimes do a better job than a written piece that people don't really have time to read. That is why I use them quite a lot.
Of course some people's writing is so compelling that you can't help but read to the end, but largely a short piece is a better bet for getting read.
Pictures do all the work for you, so even better.
I have been astounded by some of the people who have won awards in the recent past, but given the people mentioned... and many many more, the notion that a divisive politician could be considered to be Briton's greatest person on the past year is beyond belief.
Poor poor judgement.
How could they nominate HIM as Briton of the Year, well how could they nominate Ruth and Johann as Debaters of the Year (any year) but they did.
ReplyDeleteWe should remember that the establishment is quite happy to watch the sma' folk give their lives, the more the merrier, more money and prestige for them and well that is what they keep the serfs for.
May I say that Rupert Murdoch had his teeth drawn when they said his staff were guilty of phone hacking but I think a lot was missed, like how do you get mobile phone telephone Numbers to hack them. There is no phone book is there?
Niko, who on earth would imitate you, and you really are not that erudite, and you forget there is everything on the Web, you just need to know where to look or to be bothered looking. Anyway as Tris says Munguin will take action against anyone who does, maybe they are in North Korea.
Munguin will take action, and it will be swift and terrible... or so he said after I took him his early morning champagne and truffles...
DeleteHelena
ReplyDeleteYou dont do irony do you ? er nope ..your are increasingly coming across as
a bitter twisted woman I am sorry to say.
Don't be ridiculous, Niko, or it's Munguin's dungeons for you too.
Deletetris

so unfair .......
When I used to say that to my Gran abouit my brother ... "He started it...." She used to reply "And I'll finish it!"
ReplyDeleteThat's life Niko... It's just like that.
Still you always have Greek poetry to cheer you up...
yeah that'll do for me
Tha's just showing off.
DeleteApart from the word "Aphrodite", I understood nothing!
I'll have to wait till the furry one is awake. I'm sure he speaks Greek!
