Alex's Conference Speech

  1. Thanks for posting that speech! I was wondering where I might find it!

On a related subject, it seems bittertogether are in full meltdown mode.

Oh dear! Things going from bad to worse for bettertogether! Now we know they were playing politics with currency!

    1. Thanks Dean.

I know you're not an SNP supporter, but it was a cracker of a speech, don't you think?

    2. I actually preferred Nicola's speech - I've only seen a wee bit on youtube but read your transcript.

    3. It was well crafted as speeches go Niko. It focused on avoiding praising the already converted, and continuing to make a coherent (and positive) case.
But it also managed to avoid the whole 'SNP victors' thing, and tried to reach us Labourites.

After all, the 'missing million' of Scottish politics tend to be traditionally labour supporting families. Not sure if this is really the case so much anymore, but you don't win the support of the poorest by trashing donald dewer & keir hardie do you?

It was clever, as speeches go. But speeches at the SNP conference won't be the key to winning the independence referendum. It will be grass roots campaigning, its the one strength YES2014 has than Naw can't match.

Naw dominate mainstream media, they dominate the political establishment, but they can't match grass roots activism and recent civic Scotland endorsements from actors, poets et cetera.

There is a reason the late Edwin Morgan left money to the SNP, its the same reason the late Jimmy Reid left Labour to join the Nats. Its not about whether or not we want 'to become a nation again' (silly nationalist bollocks, we're already 'a nation') its about what kind of SOCIETY we want to create.

And that, is the YES2014 trump card. Salmond speech tried to focus on that, more substantive collection of points.

    5. Completely agree that it's grass roots activism that will win it.

Most politicians and the media can't claim great respect from most people... obviously there are exceptions, but it's folk out there knocking on doors that do it... and as the picture over at Wings showed.... they don't exactly have a lot of them.

Not so much being a nation again, which I agree we are, but controlling our own taxes and spending...completely. and making all our own decisions about whether to go to war, whether to pay pensions, whether to have nuclear power... etc... which we don't do at the moment.

At least they are world class politicians unlike Lamont who is.......... I'l figure it out in a minute............ it's at the tip of my tongue hang on in there..........GOT IT! Unlike Lamont who is not only a failed politician but also a failed teacher as well. I wonder what she has planned fore her next work experience programme.....

  4. Jeez Niko you really are screwed up today you get Alex Salmond's speech all wrong, you have quoted Lamont's speech in error and the full saying is Bah HUMBUG as I'm sure you well know. So in future we'll have no more churlishness from you if you don't mind Niko and we'll have the FULL saying please! LOL

    1. Poor old Niko.

He sees his beloved union disappearing like champagne in the House of Commons.

And even though he is going to be a Cypriot very soon... he still longs for the House of Lords and the Changing of the Guard.

Old people take change badly Arbroath. We should feel some sympathy for him. We'll be old too one day.

I tend not to take too much account of party leaders speeches at conference, although as Dean noted, AS doesn't fall into many of the traps that Lamont, Davidson and Rennie fall into with their hatred of anything not British. I tend to have a wee smile when I hear them doing that, esp when people in England are asserting their englishness as it's just British to them anyway , and the nay sayers are up there shouting from the rooftops for in effect Englishness. You couldn't write it in a novel, no one would believe you.

But anyway, the speech was fine as speeches go, usual lack of coverage from the msm and the bbc, to be expected really, AS is not Farage after all. He is correct though that the YES Campaign have got to reach out until the last minute, the simple fact is that it will be traditional labour voters in the main who will decide this vote. If we can get the ones who came off the register to vote, such as RI are doing in the schemes, then there is a real chance that it will be a YES in September.

Somedays my head says no and my heart screams yes, it will go to the wire and the last 4 weeks of the campaign will be vital.I suspect that the YES campaign will have a few we gems up their sleeve as so far they have fought possibly the most amazing campaign in the history of politics in this country, against the most advanced and experienced propoganda machine in the history of the world apart from the Catholic Church.

I must admit I also think that in NS the SNP have someone who can reach out across the board. I don't get the hatred thing about AS at all, when has he not tried to stand up for Scotland. Maybe that is the issue, he stands up for Scotland and not Britan i.e. England which Labour does. I suppose seeing Scotland as a country and not a region helps, but obviously they are many in the brainwashed that sadly see Scotland as just a region, Lamont et al.

Still a decent speech from both and everything to fight for. Better Together are in trouble and have been for a long time, once the official campaign starts and the BBC have to at least give a bit more even treatment then we might start to see a bit of a shift.

    Bring it on.

    Bruce

PS - Niko you just don't get it.
