THAT'S ASDA PRICE... AT SAINSBURY'S

Repas du soir
chez Munguin
I was in the local Sainsbury this afternoon getting Munguin's Foie Gras, Camembert and Veuve Clicquot.

When I'd paid, the cashier gave me a ticket that said that they checked prices at Asda every day and that, had I done the equivalent shop there, I'd have saved £2.02.

On my next shop at Sainsbury, the £2.02 would be deducted from my bill on presentation of that ticket.

Of course I was pleased. Not a fortune, but in these hard times (that we are all in together) it all helps. I mentioned to the lady that this was great because, although it's cheaper than most other stores, ASDA was on my blacklist since the referendum... and she replied that quite a lot of people were saying that very same thing.

I wonder if ASDA are noticing yet that it's a bad idea to hack off 45%+ of the population and their customers.

  1. To be fair Tris, I think it might be a tad early for ASDA to notice. I'd give it another couple of weeks and then they might start to ask a few awkward questions. I just hope they are really prepared for the even more awkward answers. LOL

    1. Probably too early to see any great change in their income Arbroath. I just wondered if they had noticed some nice quiet times.

    2. Aye well they'll need all the quiet times they can get Tris, after all they'll need to keep all their shelves fully stocked for the customer rush expected any time soon! Oh wait a minute. I forgot. The customer rush will NOT be happening at ASDA it will be at ALDI's, LIDL's, Morrison's etc. LOL

    3. Do we have a list of safe shops? Morrison's OK?

    4. I'm sure I've seen a list somewhere Tris just can't remember where. If I come across it I'll let you know. ASDA is obviously on the list as was TESCO if I remember right. Morrison's might be O.K. Tris just wish I could remember where I saw that list.

We only use TESCO for the small essentials we need in between our main shop. Mind you I think worrying about whether we are all boycotting TESCO is the LEAST of their problems at the moment, what with them mis-accounting for £250 Million and recently receiving their FIFTH private jet I think they might be otherwise engaged for the next few months. LOL

    5. |Yeah, I'd be obliged Arbroath.

I'm not 100% strict about it. As I said, if I need something at B&Q and it's a fair bit cheaper there than at Homebase, then I'll buy it there.

I used to do a lot of shopping at ASDA, but I won't now.

I'm not 100% boycotting. There are too many of them to do that.

But you';re right. Tescos are in a bit of a state... How much did thier value crash?

How many other stores did the same?

  2. Well done tris, might have expected you to be a noer with that shopping, tho yessers come from all spheres lol ;-)

    1. I wish we had an Asda up here so I could boycott it!

    2. Ah, M, that shopping is Munguins. I have a tin of beans and a dop of Vimto.

John... you need to ask that man whose shop we did an advertising feature on... If he was a no man, I guess that's you stymied!

But I'll double boycott ASDA on your behalf.

    3. Tris

It's a community shop and the community agree with me!

    4. John, I'm in the same boat, figuratively speaking. The nearest ASDA to me is in Carlisle, and as Munguin will no doubt be able to confirm, that is Dan Suff, as in South of the border. Being the nice considerate and caring free thinking Scot that I am I do NOT cross the border unless absolutely necessary, weddings, funerals etc. So I'm like you I'm afraid, I have no ASDA to boycott! However, every time we do our weekly shop at ALDI's in Dumfries I give some *ahem* serious consideration to all that custom that ASDA are NOT getting from us! LOL

    5. OK so now I'm triple boycotting Asda!

Ah yeah, John, I'd forgotten it was a community shop. Munguin and I would love to come and do our shopping there... we might bring Niko and Taz for a visit.

  3. There isn't an Asda convenient to me and I would not shop there anyway even if there was. They are owned by Walmart (USA) who have an atrocious reputation for poor pay and discrimination against women.

    1. I agree that Walmart is an appalling company, but in fairness to ASDA they have had a very good neighbourhood policy in Scotland at least.

At one time I was involved with one of the local ones to provide free essentials for people who were going back to work after a period on benefits. They were incredibly generous... as, I should add, were Boots.

    2. I should be boycotting Asda, but as I do not buy much there any more I have to go somewhere for clothes and Primark is not my scene. We have closed our Royal Bank of Scotland or as my Husband said to them the Royal Bank of the Northern Cringe, and opened one with Santander. My main shop is done in Aldi and Tesco get a tiny amount, with stuff I cannot buy in Aldi. Like you it is the things for the Aristocrats amongst us, in my case Goats Milk Yoghurt for Prince Hektor and Daktarin Cream for his itchy bits. We have to travel to either Kirkcaldy or Edinburgh for Sainsbury's. We do use them if we are out at Straiton at Ikea. I think Sainsbury are also one of the Triumvirate who were not happy with Independence for Scotland, only those European firms were free of taint. So more power to Lidl and Aldi, long may they increase their sales and the second one in Dunfermline is getting bigger, taken over the old Blockbuster shop.

    3. Must admit I'm looking forward to them expanding.

The Aldi in Arbroath Road Dundee used to have an empty car park... getting parked near the door was easy, but now you have to drive round waiting for a space... or park in the road!

  4. Hate to say but didn't Sainsburys also come out against independence? 3 members of the family were made life peers - one Tory, one Labour, one unaligned. I'm sure I remember the Tory one speaking out, can anyone confirm?

But Asda/Walmart do have a bad reputation. In USA, they have now removed health insurance from their employees working under 30 hours. So low paid and uninsured now.

I'd stick to Lidl/Aldi. Lidl's champagne is lovely and though I don't eat foie or cheese, they have good reps too.

    1. I'm not sure that they did PP. I suspect that they were against it, like all the Eng;lish owned stores, because it would have meant more work for them but I remember thinking that when Labour was going on and on about higher prices, they seemed to leave Sainsbury's out. I thought it might be because they didn't want to do His Nobleness's business down.

However, I totally agree with you that for most things Aldi or Lidl are great.

I'd add that Farmfoods has some great bargains, as does Home Bargains. Hovis crackers at 55p where in Tesco they are £1.40!!!

As far as i know they didn't come out with any anti Scottish stuff at referendum time.

I wonder if Munguin would notice if we gave him Lidl champagne...

    2. Tris, I think you just might shove the Lidl Champagne in under the radar, certainly all the wine from Aldi is of a high standard, and we are quite particular. I certainly am, as on a diet only get one half bottle a week.

    2. It's true that a lot of businesses came out against... and I won;t make a martyr of myself by refusing ever to buy anything from them (not that my meagre spendings would make any difference).

I'll not cut off my nose to spite my face. If ASDA or B & Q has something I need and can't get elsewhere, I'll buy it, but for preference I will use places that didn't get involved. A lot of small local businesses were openly YES. I try to support them where I can.

I like Sainsbury's . But I agree with Panda Paws. Lidl and Aldi are far better shops. By and large the staff are excellent and the products have to be on average 10% cheaper.

    3. Well just been to Aldi this morning and now my freezer if stuffed full of goodies. Good Aberdeen Angus Minced Beef reduced, two packs. One pack of Pulled Pork also reduced. A couple of packs, one of Beef and Dumplings in Drambuie sauce and one of Chicken Balmoral. Venison Stir Fry from the firm set up by that nice Danish Man. My Diet Chef look alikeys, which thanks to Aldi I am well on my way to my goal weight. Husband with his Innes and Gunn Rum flavoured beer, which is cheaper than it is next door in Tesco. So who on earth needs any of the rest.
Aldi has no need for their advertising their customers do it for them.

  6. I enjoy this site so much Tris.

Champers always triggered a migraine with me so i avoid anything with grape. Shame tho i did enjoy white wine.

I am a beer man. Budweiser Love the taste although a good single malt won't be knocked back.

I am boycotting myself now. Turning into a right wee radical. And it's funny to hear others doing the same my way. they will notice by the end of month. I asked the co-op to stop putting the union flag on their tomatoes (and i know these folk and it was said in jest) and they are at pains to tell me they come like that from the deliveries trucks. They pointed out that they try to show "Scottish " products as much as they can. Big S.T Andrews flag on the strawberries and i am not the first to mention it. chuckle.

Anyone know where the list is ??

someone showed it on Wings but i can't find it now. it would make interesting reading.

    2. I'll try to find a list and publish it.

I saw something on Twitter not too long ago.

Aldi has some nice beer Richy... Quite cheap too.

And I try to buy Scottish produce when I can, firstly because the Green part of me thinks that local is better for the planet... and secondly, Scottish produce is Scottish jobs.

If it's a choice between a butchers' apron and a saltire on a product there is absolutely no hesitation.

Every time I see that flag I think of the slaughter, inequality and indecency it represents.

  11. tris

So you shop at sainsburys and give your money to those who gave the Labour party zillions????Just goes to show how puerile this boycott truly is.
Still Nats what can you do with em .

Aldi the truth is in this age of austerity many people have cut off there taste buds to justify buying cheaper food ,some of Aldi products are fine but many are just plain tasteless.
The fact is as ever you want quality it costs a little bit more we get our bread from asda as it taste better than Sainsburys and some other bibs and bobs . My wife gets a discount from working at Sainsburys but we shop around Taz has his dog biscuits from Aldi but not his meat.

I am all for saving some cash and shopping at various shops is probably the best way
but real quality food costs a bit more and thats a fact.

  12. Is it that difficult to make the break from shopping in the capitalist cathedrals of the giant supersuppliers? Aren't there any local shops left in Scotland? I know a lot of folk don't have a lot of time to give to shopping but a well-planned circuit of a few different local outlets can take not much longer than a soulless slog through Tesco's

Here in Home Counties exile, we have been "boycotting" most of the big supermarket chains for ages, not for any political or ethical reasons, but because most of what is on offer is crap and you can get better quality and often better value from local sources. LIDL, ALDI and a new kid on the block called B&M are the exceptions and these are useful when time is tight and probably best for tinned and bottled stuff.

Local "convenience" stores, especially Asian and Polish ones can be remarkably good value. Fruit and veg is seriously better quality, Polish cold meats and pates are superb and remarkably cheap and Halal lamb is great. Local butchers can be a bit pricey but you get what you pay for i.e. sausages with real meat in them, bacon which isn't 60% water, chicken with flavour, etc. We have a problem getting fresh fish but the in the few white fish shops we have we know it really is fresh, not the tired looking stuff that is slapped on the supermarkets' "fresh" fish counters.

I really recommend giving local shopping a go. If it works out to be too dear or too time consuming in your area, c'est la vie. At least you'll have met some real people who enjoy the service they're giving you.
