THEY MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT...DESPITE THE UNIONIST PRESS'S CONSTANT CRITICISM

In an email to Munguin from the first minister I noticed the following two paragraphs.

I was both delighted and humbled this week to see that people of Scotland continue to place their trust in the Scottish Government to listen to them and act in their best interests.

The latest social attitudes survey found that 73 per cent of people in Scotland trust the Scottish Government, the highest level since 1999, compared with 23 per cent who trust the UK Government.

Now all we usually hear from the Press and the BBC is "SNP bad" But Holyrood Magazine's poll shows that the Scottish public doesn't actually agree with them.

And it is interesting that 76% of the poll of 1,288 people thought that the Scottish government should have control over most of what happens in Scotland.

We've long believed that the Press had much less influence over the public's opinion than it thinks it has. For example the D C Thomson press in Dundee produces the ultra conservative Dundee Courier, Evening Telegraph, and the once ubiquitous Sunday Post.

Once upon a time one of these papers, maybe more (and the now-defunct People's Journal) went through the letter boxes of the vast majority of Dundee homes, and yet they stubbornly voted Labour at every election, until very recently, when they have solidly voted SNP.

Any you have to ask yourself how many people who read the Sun actually vote Tory.

The Press and Journal were running a story earlier saying that the Scottish government is the most trusted in Europe, but it has mysteriously disappeared.

I wonder why.

  1. The truth is out there if only people out there knew where to look. I recommend they come here for starters.

    1. Yes it is. There are so many good blogs. Not all of us have Wings' literary skills but there are many which get at the truth teh newspapers don;t bother to report.

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr... are all excellent too.

The politicians don't seem to realise that we live in a different world from the one that was convenient to them.

Thanks once again for your kind recommendation. It's appreciated.

    1. It certainly is the only major party to do that.

it's the only party that will be in goverbnment and stand up for Scotland.

I genuinely believe that had we not had the hard headed and utterly determined John Swinney leading in teh negotiations with No 11, our settlement would ahve been far worse than it is.

I've no idea who is Labour's finance spokesman these days, but(s)he would almost certainly not have fought for every last penny and held them to the "no detriment" clause in Smith's conclusions.

As for the Tories,... yeah, well!

  6. Totally O/T, but very welcome news - IDS has resigned.

Due to some commitments, I won't be posting very often (work doesn't allow access to here unfortunately, and I can't afford wifi charges on my tablet). However I will catch up whenever possible. This is one of the best political blogs, and although I don't always agree with comments I do rate it very highly.

  8. He has just resigned supposeedly because of benfits cuts.
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has resigned over "indefensible" changes to disability benefits.
    On BBC
It comes amid mounting controversy over £4bn of planned cuts to Personal Independence Payments, expected to affect 640,000 people.

Mr Duncan Smith said the cuts were "not defensible" within a Budget that "benefits higher earning taxpayers".

Excuse me while I choke in disbelief.

  9. " indefensible cuts" from IDS, that beggars belief, a man without honour or scruples or pity. Did we not see this individuals ecstasy, clapping and cheering as the previous round of cuts were announced.

  10. Well if the likes of the Daily Mail is having a go at you, then you must be doing something right!

The Sunday Post was a constant presence in my childhood, I don't know anyone who buys it now.

    1. It had, at one time, saturation circulation in Scotland, so I'm told.

There were very few households that didn't take it.

Oor Wullie, The Broons... 80 years old I'm told.

They are having a very serious sales drive at the moment, offering it free or cheap for 10 weeks, and a Marks & Spencer's coupon too!

I'd not give it house space, but I guess some people like it.

  11. IDS resigned because he was stopped from attacking state pensioners who also had private pensions.
