GREAT BRITISH VALUES...AN OCCASIONAL SERIES

THE BENGAL FAMINE

In 1943 close to four million people in the Indian state of Bengal died from starvation, malnutrition and disease.

The British, led by Winston Churchill, took tens of thousands of tons of grain to feed its troops and allies, leaving millions of Indians to starve and die.

This photo is not retouched; it tells of a terrible man-made tragedy that is strangely missing from the glorious empire stories we were taught at school.

    1. Shameful Dan. Great British values... I think Churchill called them heathens becasue they weren't Christian. I sometimes wonder if these people ever read a bible in their lives.

    1. Indeed, I probably got that one from there. It turned up on my feed anyway.

Funny how these things never found their way into the history books.

  4. In India then and in far too many countries still today peoples are suffering not only nutritional deficiency but from famine-induced ailments such as tuberculosis, whooping coughs and respiratory infections which add to the total of human miseries. As in India then we gloss over these facts and we certainly do not want any publicity given to them lest it tarnishes the Great British pretence to being a compassionate country.

    1. I see that they have found a way of reducing the overseas aid budget without falling below the threshold for G8 membership. They intend to use some of the budget for the war on terror, because that's worked out really well so far!
