    1. Yeah, Jon, they are brilliant. I saw them ages ago and forgot about them till my mum reminded me I'd sent her an email with them in. We were falling about laughing at them last night and I thought you guys would appreciate them.

Hope you're enjoying the almost-as-funny election campaign ...at least in the GOP. Some of the stuff is much more amusing than any jokes I ever put up here. Of course the outcome might not be quite so amusing.

    2. Watching the Republicans self-destruct is almost as amusing as these, but also a sobering reminder of just how twisted their mindset is, and how dangerous it can be when given the reins of government.

My own sense, as of today, is that both Donald "Il Douche" Trump and Ted "Calgary" Cruz are so toxic to everyone outwith Republican primary voters (did I get that usage right?) that either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders will win in November while Democrats retake the Senate. Some pundits have suggested that Trump is so toxic that the House of Representatives could also be in play; I hope so, but doubt it.

The key difference between Trump and Cruz is this: Trump is an opportunistic egomaniac who may or may not believe about half of what he says; Cruz is an authoritarian theocrat who believes he is destined to lead and really does believe what he says. Of those two, Cruz is more dangerous.

Whatever people may think of Clinton and Sanders, they're both infinitely better than Trump and Cruz, which is why I'm voting blue no matter who (blue is good over by here).

But first things first: From what I gather, the constituency vote is pretty well set in stone, but how's the list vote shaping up?

    3. We might try offering Cruz the position of Prime Minister of Canada (is it "Prime Ministership?), the land of his birth. Hard to know what might distract the Donald. His mother is from Scotland. Is the leadership of the SNP a possibility? He might enjoy the opportunity to right some of the wrongs he has suffered at the hands of the government of Scotland. ;-))

It IS nice to see the Republicans self-destructing.....if it were not for the tiny theoretical outside chance that whichever one becomes the Republican nominee for President might actually win. No one ever went broke by betting against the intelligence of the American voter. (At least in the red states.)

    4. Jon: You put it all beautifully! I couldn't disagree with a word.

Yes, as far as Scotland goers, it seem... and there are three weeks to go, so must assume nothing... that the constituency vote is pretty much for SNP. The two other parties are resolved to fighting for second place and the two minor parties are fighting over 4th and 5th.

The list is also favouring the SNP with about 48% showing in the polls as against 20ish for Labour, but the D'honte system that we use is so complex (although in my opinion reasonably fair) that is is hard to say how many seats that will give the government.

I think the question is not who will win the election, but if the SNP will win an outright majority which the system is set up to avoid.

If you have a look at the posts on Scot Goes Pop, you will see various polls analysed by James, who is a bit of an expert in these matters.

Of course who runs Scotland isn't of the same world importance as who runs the USA...

I always get confused that your red is our blue and vice versa. I know of course, but that doesn't stop a momentary horror at seeing a lot of blue. It's a gut reaction!!

    5. Stop right there Danny.

He's yours. You keep him. :)

I believe his mother came from one of the islands. Maybe he'd like to take up the title of "Lord of the Isles" which I think is currently held by Charlie Saxe Coberg Gotha. They could "pistols at dawn" for it!

I'm pretty certain that, the Sarah Palin types notwithstanding, neither Cruz nor Trump will ever sit in the Whitehouse.

It's just struck me that Sarah is a religious nut job... So d'you think that she hung her coat on the wrong peg? Wouldn't she be more obviously a Cruz supported. But then again, someone who can see Russia from her bedroom window on a clear day and wants to negotiate with the Queen of England, is probably more a Trumpy!

      I miss her...

    6. Hey Tris.....I think "Lord of the Isles" might appeal to Donald. (After all, even the President of the United States is never more than a citizen of the republic.) Since he's so much wealthier than Charlie, he could probably just buy the title from him.

At the time that Sarah came to Iowa to "endorse" Donald Trump and start making speeches for him, it was noted that at an earlier time back in Texas, she had endorsed Cruz for his Senate race, and has had a lot of nice things to say about him in the past. But politics makes strange bedfellows I guess.

I don't think that Palin made that many speeches really, since her husband was in the hospital for a long time after being seriously injured in a snowmobile accident(and a son was in trouble with the police I think.) So she went back to Alaska at some point and hardly appeared in the media. But she came back to make a speech for Trump in Milwaukee before the Wisconsin Primary.

No one (not even FOX News) pays any attention to her anymore, but her speeches lately have been disasters. Even people who once supported her are noting how absolutely unhinged she now seems to be....even by Palin standards. The Wisconsin speech was all the talk in the media. Her hair looked uncombed, and much of the speech didn't seem to make any sense. There were questions raised about the possibility of drug or alcohol use. The audience seemed embarrassed and often looked away. There was tepid applause on only one occasion during the speech.

Here's a sample. Maybe the Queen (who she negotiates foreign policy with) can help straighten her out. ;-))

    7. James is one of my must-reads -- along with the Rev. and a certain penguin's human -- so I've got that sense of it, though I always like to ask people "on the ground" in a district (or riding, for our Canadian friends) for their senses of matters.

Also: Blue vs. red, left side of the road vs. right side of the road, football vs. football... These complex matters are always best discussed over a pint or two.

    8. :) :)

      I'm certainly all for that!!

As far as the feeling on the ground is concerned it's pretty difficult to tell how many seats the SNP or Greens will get (or indeed how many the others will get) on the list. Given the likelihood of a very good result for the SNP in the constituencies, they will not be expecting a vast number of regional seats. The odds will be stacked against that, even with high voting, which is why it is so important to get everyone who is that way inclined to vote SNP on both ballots.

    9. EWWWWW Danny.... That's some weird stuff she came out with there... Word salad does seem to express it well.

Oddly she seemed to know that Reagan save Harley Davidson though, I suppose that counts for something.

I'm bemused by the fact that she thinks god approves of all this capitalism stuff though. As a non Christian I'd have thought he was likely to be a wee bit to the left of Reagan!!

As you say, she sounds unhinged. Even more so that 8 years ago. But to be fair to her, she doesn't look a day older!

    1. I know. We should be incredibly grateful that people try to translate into English for us. OK, they may not make a lot of sense, but they are a good deal more intelligible than the original.

English is actually quite difficult to learn, a least from the point of view of spelling, pronunciation and grammar. Far too many irregulars!

    1. H a ha ha ha... A French friend visiting Dundee asked me. Don't they speak English here? Poor guy, went to all the trouble of learning English and when he came to Scotland discovered that the language of the streets was unintelligible. Peterheid too, it seems!
