DODGY DAVE

It's a funny old world, isn't it?

One in which when the SNP clap in Westminster, it is wrong and disrespectful and Mr Speaker gets quite schoolmarmish about it and tells then that while they may have meant well, they haven't yet been in England long enough to understand the different way they do things...properly.

So whilst it is not considered bad manners to boo and roar and wave papers in the air and behave like a bunch of 6 year olds whose teacher has popped out of the room for a second, it is extremely bad manners, uncouth and beastish to clap...as one might do at, say, the opera.
Then a few weeks later when a some members stick a knife in Willie Hague's back while he is trying to stick one in the back of the Speaker, on Cameron's orders, and the Speaker comes out smiling, while Willie Hague's last act in the House of Commons is to be resoundingly humiliated, it suddenly has become good manners to clap and all is well in the world.
And it seems to stay like that. Because not long after that Blairite Hilary Benn makes a warmongering speech, going against his party leader's stance on war in Syria (one we can neither afford nor win), it's all Tory hands to the clap again. Note, it's the last few minutes of the video that you'll want, containing clapping and the embarrassing praise from Hammond of Benn's speech. The rest is too awful for words.

Now Munguin isn't a betting animal but he reckons a pound to a pinch of snuff that if the SNP try clapping again, it will have reverted to boorishness, and not the behaviour expected of gentlemen of the Hon, Rt Hon, Learned or Gallant persuasion.
So it shouldn't come as any great surprise to any of our readers that when David Cameron insulted Dennis Skinner a few months ago by telling him he could take his pension at any time, and indeed he advised him to do so, rude and ungentlemanly behaviour to a man with more experience than Mr Cameron will ever have, and who is old enough to be Cameron's father, nothing was said about it.

And he has form. Here he called Mr Skinner a dinosaur.
However, when Mr Skinner said that Dave was dodgy, an understatement of mammoth proportions in anyone's terms (given that he clearly lied all week about his gains from offshore investments), Skinner was told to retract, and when he refused,  to leave the chamber.

Rather like the subject of the business, there seems to be one rule for some, and one rule for the rest.

Does anyone seriously think that Dave isn't dodgy? or the Commons corrupted?

    1. No matter what the subject, there is an "us and them" situation in Britain. That it exists in other countries is undoubtedly true, but you have to wonder if it is anything like to the same extent.

It's strange that one should find it so cheering that just occasionally someone who is someone and knows "people" gets caught and is punished. I can remember the joy of hearing that Archer and Aitken hadn't got judges who went to the same school!

I see that the Chilcott report is to be redacted!

    2. Chilcott to be redacted? The tippex factories will be going on to a three-shift system.

    3. LOL. They'll just print the bits we are allowed to see. Paper companies around the world are going into receivership.

  2. Cameron is an arrogant bully who was bailed out by 55% of Scotland. I've never understood the farmyard noise routine of Westminster, what is honourable about that?

Obviously, I look forward to the day we have no MP's in this horrible place but I can see the day I support the SNP refusing to take their seats here.

    1. True. We could have been shot of him. He would have resigned if we'd voted YES.

I don't really care about the farmyard noises in Westminster. That they give a terrible impression of the country is undoubted, but I really couldn't care less about that. What I do care about is the amount of time they waste with all this carrying on. The amount of time that the teacher has to tell them to be quiet and sit down and stop playing with their catapults... oh no sorry, that's a D C Thomson comic.

By ordinary people's standards these people are on good salaries. We pay for them to behave like a bunch of St Trinian pupils.

In any other workplace it wouldn't be tolerated.

No, I'd have no problem with all the SNP refusing to take their seats in the silly place. But when the press can turn a Labour problem like PFI schools falling down after 10 years into SNP bad, can you imagine what they would make of a boycott of Westminster?

  3. Heard on R$ thi morning that they said in the Daily Mail (Yeugh) that yesterday was the French Revolution moment which the PM managed to get round(Why), now I am n record as having said that Denis Skinner is no friend of Scotland and therefore a plague on all his houses, but he was right yesterday. Amazing what the speaker will do in Westminster to people who tell the truth but our presiding officer will let liars carry on, as in Jackie Baillie, Wee Willie Rennie, Kesia Dugdale and of course Ruth, the tankette Davidson.
I too want the SNP to come home and tell them to take their seats and shove it. I have never wanted them down in that den on corruption. Helena

    1. The trouble with Britain is that these people somehow manage to get off the hook where they wouldn't with any other country...

Aas with Tony been I disagree with Dennis on a lot of stuff, but on many matters he is bang on. Rather like the SNP MPs he tends not to care too much for all the conventions of Westminster.

Dave is dodgy. There's not much of an argument about that. He may not seem dodgy to his aristocratic or stockbroker, establishment friends, but to ordinary people like us he does.

As I said before he became prime minister, it is a problem having a man at the top of the government who doesn't have the foggiest idea how 95% of the population lives.

I find Bercow to be shocking and pompous to be honest. He is not a good speaker at all, thinks way too much about himself and is generally full of it. Some of his comments during the debate really showed the parliament up to be as stupid and outdated as it could get. It really is a ridiculous place and how it operates. He is also very unfair in his treatment of MPs, esp the SNP who get booed and distrupted everytime they talk but that appears to be fair game. The man is a joke and I too would have no problem with the SNP not sitting in the building even though there is that part of me that wants them to up their game and disrupt the whole rotten place, they are too nice, but I know they can't win either way but Bercow can go do one the pompous arse.

    1. He is a pompous ass Bruce, although sometimes he can be extremely amusing in his pomposity. (At the start of one of the videos clearly some junior minister sitting on the front bench has offered up a comment which we can't hear, but Bercow's reply is hilarious. "As if I need advice from some junior minister" he says pouring scorn on the pomposity of the man.

I think the best thing that the SNP can do is work hard, accept their rules (when in Rome) and get respect for attending debates that are relevant to Scotland and speaking up for Scotland.

Of course no one will listen; they don't care what happens here, or Northern England, Wales or NI. But I think they should show an example of what a modern parliament should be.

I'd be really happy if none of them were in Westminster, becasue Westminster had nothing to do with us!!

    2. We have Holyrood to win. We then have council elections next year. If the momentum can be kept up I can see no reason not to stand on a ticket for Westminster next time of choosing to sit in Edinburgh, and not Westminster if we get a majority.

They still pay the Irish Republican's salaries. They still get their expenses.

I don't expect Gideon or Boris will be keen on acquiescing to Indyref2.

  5. I like the moniker Dodgy Dave. I would like to see it stick and be added to like Dodgy Dave's Dingbats and Doggies - i.e. the Tories.

  6. Dreadful Dennis mair like, as soon as Skinner got to his feet, Cameron and Osborne knew he'd mak an erse o it, and he didn't disappoint them, they pissed themselves as the old codger flew into a rage, and dominated the evenings news.

    1. Skinner has become the court jester in Parliament I'm afraid.

    2. I reckon he knows that they laugh at him... but he makes his point, even if he is excluded from the chamber all day.

Guess what has been trending on twitter all day... Dodgy Dave!

    3. Skinner is due credit at least for answering back at the daft rumours circulating in the media about the new SNP MPs supposedly trying to "steal his seat". Ditto Diane Abbott.

He is a better man than the Tory front bench combined, I'll give him that too.
