IT'S WORLD PENGUIN DAY

And Finally

This is a beautiful story of the affection and devotion that is possible between man and bird.

A South American Magellanic penguin swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.

Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found the tiny penguin, covered in oil and close to death, lying on rocks on his local beach in 2011.

Joao cleaned the oil off the penguin’s feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to build his strength. He named him Dindim.

After a week, he tried to release the penguin back into the sea. But, the bird wouldn’t leave. ‘He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,’ Joao recalls.

And, just a few months later, Dindim was back. He spotted the fisherman on the beach one day and followed him home.

For the past five years, Dindim has spent eight months of the year with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile.

  1. sad to hear how many species are endangered. Some are cuter than others but aren't they great when fluffy. Munguin will never be endangered whilst he has his slave Tris to dance attendance on him!

Ps I'm giving politics a miss at the moment, so glad of more animals. Fed up of hearing how grate sorry great Ruthless is! Roll one next Friday when we know what is what...

    1. Munguin says he has no intention of being extinct and that, in fact, even if Tris disappeared he'd find some other toady to do for him.

We're sick of politics at the moment but so very angry about these kids in Calais. We're angry at the French for doing so little to make sure that the kids, at least, are rescued from the jungle (whatever happened to the great socialist Hollande?); angry at the British government for being the British government (and slimeballs) and being scared of UKIP and UKIP voters.

Pity the Conservatives aren't standing in the Scottish election. We could have a go at them about it. But you'll have heard of the new party, I assume? I hope that comes back to bite her on the arse. If you are ashamed of your party you shouldn't be in it.

Maybe we'll find out what Labour stands for tomorrow... on the other hand we probably won't.

Can people who postal voted get their votes back when they find out?

  2. Happy Penguin Day, Munguin.

Sorry I'm late, not been near the internet much, having to replace my bathroom floor after a flood.

    1. Argh.... Been there Jim, and it is miserable.

Small consolation, but at least a consolation, is that you know what you're doing.

I had to get a wee man in... and he turned out to be an expensive wee man!

Hope you got it sorted now.

And Munguin says when it comes round, he'll wish you a Happy Human day.

      :)

  3. Catching up, I though Dindim and Munguin would get

on very well. Both have their servants. I too seem to be having a week off politics though I suspect the lie dubs forgot to post their material in the correct manner and we got a wee message that we needed to go pay for a couple of envelopes, needless to say we declined. Really angry about the fate of the kids, we could have taken the all and never noticed. Helena

    1. LOL Imagine paying for election material ... Pfffffff

Munguin is fond of Dindim... He pointed out though that I shouldn't get any big ideas; he wouldn't swim across the bath to see me!
