THIS IS TOMMY SHEPPARD'S MAIDEN SPEECH

DOESN'T HE MAKE YOU PROUD?

It's also good to note that Mr Bercow accepted the apology with great grace. I'm also delighted to see so many Scottish MPs there for the Trident debate.
This video has been made private but Maiden Speeches can be seen here. Thanks to Red Tories Out and Helen Ross on Twitter for the heads up.

    2. My old neighbourhood, A great Speech and my only wish is that it had happened sooner. Well we have Douglas Chapman ans I am sure he will do us proud also, and we got rid of Cara Hilton as Cooncillor on the 8th of May, looking forward to getting shot of her totally in May 2016.

  2. Munguin & Tris, it's been a while since I was here. I am still hungover over my trip to Scotland and the ensuing election results. I see my pic is up on the wall of honour :P Most humbled. I actually want to do some write up on the trip but have got no time yet. Anyway my blasted RSS feed had been rebooted and deleted list of blogs I have been following. Hence compounding the silence.

    The events taking place after the election is electrifying and dumbfounding at the same time. Particularly the Carmichael saga and the new Scotland Act amendment bill.

    On the Carmichael saga I think is quite easy to get rid of him. Scottish Affairs select committee should threat to drag Mundell into this ruckus. It so happens that the SNP is chairing this committee. That will make Cameron sit up straight.

    Scotland Act bill...sigh. What an obfuscation. And I am speaking as a trained (formerly) advocate & solicitor most familiar with English/common law. I think it will the entire 56 MPs will have to fine comb through each clause. Maybe they should divide the bill up for easier management.

    That being said...we live in interesting times.

    My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer -
    A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
    My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.
    Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North
    The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;
    Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
    The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

    Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow;
    Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
    Farewell to the forrests and wild-hanging woods;
    Farwell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

    My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
    My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer
    Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
    My heart's in the Highlands, whereever I go.

    1. Hello AH. Nice to see you here again. I take it from the poem that you enjoyed your visit. :)

      Munguin and I enjoyed the time you spent with us. And yes, your photograph is up there with ministers, pop stars and ambassadors...

      As far as the Carmichael thing goes, there is a crowd funding appeal to fund the court case that could see his dismissal, as it did for Phil Woolas in England at the last election.

      Within four days it is 71% funded.

      https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-people-versus-carmichael#/story

      But of course you are right, Mundell was bound to know what was going on, as indeed was Clegg and probably Cameron. The Scotland Office is tiny. It would be impossible for Mundell not to be briefed on what was going on. And with an election coming up I find it unlikely that Clegg didn't ask Carmichael what the hell he was up to...

      Anyway, please give our best wishes to your mum, dad and your sister. We enjoyed meeting them, if only briefly.

      :)

  4. Fuckin Brilliant.

    Isn't it good we have such people representing us?

    1. Yes. It is. It's good to see Scottish benches full, and look round and ask, where are the other MPs?

      And it's good that people like Tommy are so impressive, so passionate, and disprove all the garbage that has been talked about a herd of Scots going down to wreck their cosy little old boys club.

      Like I said, it made me proud.

    2. Ha ha Niko. Much better to have old Murphy voting to slaughter hundreds of thousands in Iraq.

  5. Brilliant speech, they will all do us proud. And think of the morons they replaced, did you ever hear the likes of Jimmy hood speaking?

    1. I did on one occasion hear Mr Hood. I think it was when he slurred his way through something about not giving a damn whether Scotland (and his constituents) would be better off, he would still vote for the pomp and circumstance and the House of Lords. Hic! (and not the Latin one.)

  6. Thanks for posting that Tris.

    The great thing about Tommy Sheppard's speech for me, apart from the great points he was making, is that he mostly spoke without referring to his notes. Everything came straight from the heart, and that gives me much hope for the future.

    I have listened to three maiden speeches now from SNP MP's, each one excellent in it's own way. They make me wonder though, what on earth were all those Labour MP's doing when they were in Westminster for all those years?

    John H.

    1. Totally agree John. He meant all that. He wasn't just saying it. Clearly it was planned, and he had notes, but he was doing it, as you say, from the heart.

      I'm off to listen to the speeches that Arbroath put up.

      What were the Labour people doing all these years...?

      Answers on a postcard, I think.

      :)

    2. Seems they were filling their boots. Doing what they were telt, etc, off to listen to the speeches now. Good to see that the people of Orkney have now gone to law. We were saying if they need more, on the of chance they lose for instance we must stand by them.

  7. Excellent Speech . I was intrigued to find out what Mr Speaker was about announce the removal of... when the video stopped. Could it be removal of the ban on clapping ????

    1. LOl Grump, I wondered about that too. It was a strange place to cut off!

      Probably, though, knowing Westminster, it was something about the end of the rationing of vintage champagne. You can only expect so much from the likes of Bercow.

  8. Noticed in Tommy's speech that he said a decision about a future independence referendum would be taken at Holyrood and not Westminster.
    What happens if we vote Yes and Westminster refuses to acknowledge the legitimacy of the mandate?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I suspect that it is a long answer. But I'm guessing that the SNP and other pro independence parties could only bring forward a referendum if there was a strong indication (after 2016) that people had voted for it.

      It would have to be a majority government, or a coalition with Greens and Socialists for that to happen anyway.

      Then watch Fluffy Muddle (who you will remember has assured us that the inquiry didn't implicate him in lying, so that's him cleared then, right?) overturn it.

      Of course at that point all us Scots would just say... Fine, Fluffy knows best and forget all this independence crap, in deference to his intellectual superiority!

      Or not.

  9. That man is rapidly becoming a legend, his mental prowess and oration are a joy to witness.
    Far superior to the Red Tories, that used to warm those benches.

    1. I'm impressed with his delivery and his conviction.

      It was the Yellow Tories on these benches, though Jim.

  10. I'm being deadly serious here. Tommy should be the SNP leader in the Commons, not Robertson. I know he's probably not experienced enough in Commons procedures etc, but I think he comes across much better, and an opportunity in the near future I think would be of benefit.

    I watch a lot of the Commons debates - PMQs is just a bloody joke - and you get a lot of excellent and passionate speeches from all sides in the quieter debates. That speech is one of the best I've ever seen. A perfect balance of passion, criticism, confidence and humility, delivered brilliantly.

    I've a lot of public speaking experience, including training others, and you could use this speech as a prime example of how to deliver - for any area, not just politics. It's rare to see a speech delivered without umming and eh'ing.

    Leave PMQs for Alex. Get this man onto a committee and into the higher profile debates.

    As Darth Vader would say, "impressive, most impressive".

    1. I'd certainly say that he's a man to watch for the future.

      I'm always inclined to think that it is better to have your good people do a fair apprenticeship before taking on the senior jobs.

      That's why I think Kezia Dugdale would make a bad choice of leader for Labour. She's quite bright, it seems, and politics apart she seems quite pleasant, but she hasn't the experience necessary.

      It's great to know so many really good people are coming forward though. Hopefully they will be movers and shakers in our country in the future, preferably in Edinburgh, not London.

  12. Yes, he did make me proud. An eloquent and moving speech. But just too respectful for me.

    1. Not sure that, at this stage, there is any reason why it shouldn't be reasonably respectful, Brian.

      As long as respect doesn't cover any real and determined efforts to change things for the better.

      Despite what the hateful and lying English press has been saying about the SNP people, they have impressed people as far apart as Mr Skinner (because all this nonsense about seats was just that, and Dennis has said so), and Jacob Rees Mogg, the MP for the 18th century.

      Respect for their idiotic nonsenses I can tolerate. As long as they are turning up, working hard and getting ideas through, I'm behind them. There are many ways to skin a Tory, so they tell me.

      :) Not that I'd want to!
